New Offenders

Much of modindie is taken up with fitting an expectation, in attempts to conform. Which is ironic when one considers the origins of the genre. Yet New Offenders are an example that music can stand up for itself.

Log on to www.myspace.com/newoffenders, close your eyes and listen to best appreciate why this Nottingham based indie rock band are as fresh as a daisy yet as thorny as a rose.

Before the Bomb has strong Californication influences by the mighty RHCP, however the blend of catchy keyboard chords and racing bass give the track a fresh edge that is New Offenders' trademark, to be original yet proud of the eclectic musical history that has inspired them.

For instance, cast your mind back to the theme tune for TFI Friday with Chris Evans, and you can get a feel for Shoot the Gun. Its guitar undertones pay homage to catchy riffs from Ocean Colour Scene's Riverboat Song and the crescendo beats combined with proclamation lyrics produce a winning hook that make this track a king amongst men.

Then one drifts into the purring keyboards on Road to One. A hypnotic affect that embraces a chill out vibe and leaves you feeling calm and wistful is a suitable way to describe my experience with this trancelike track.

It's reassuring to know that creative, memorable music, angst and crestfallen lyrics are just the tip of the iceberg for what shapes new talent. Get yourselves along to The Maze in Nottingham on Sunday 16th December to get in on the New Offenders jam.
